Presentation about Richfield resident Eunice Merton.
Eunice Merton (1894 to 1971) wrote enchantingly beautiful descriptions of ordinary surroundings, based on her observations in the Cuyahoga Valley and on her Richfield farm. She became nationally known for her uncanny ability to predict the severity of upcoming seasons. She was a horticulturalist who had to fight for her right to be educated, a “sometimes whimsical” historian, farmer, folklorist, and the first female president of the Summit County Farm Bureau. This talk will be mainly excerpts of Merton’s own writings on nature and gardening, tied together with bits of biographical information. Presented by Lynn Richardson, Historian for Friends of Crowell Hilaka.
