Explore the history of Portage Lakes, including its natural formation, human influence over time, and the current state of the lakes. Presented by the Summit Soil and Water Conservation District.
The Watershed Program at Summit Soil Water Conservation (SSWCD) focuses on local efforts in Summit County to encourage community involvement in caring for watersheds. They bring together elected officials, residents, and local groups to promote and support these initiatives. Currently, SSWCD is actively working on projects in the Cuyahoga River and Tuscarawas River watersheds to protect and improve these important water resources.
Summit County is special because it sits on a continental divide, which means that water from the northern part of the county flows into Lake Erie, while water from the southern part eventually makes its way to the Gulf of Mexico. How we manage our watersheds here has a significant impact, reaching far beyond our local area.
