About the poet:
Kari Gunter-Seymour was appointed the Poet Laureate of Ohio in 2020. Her poetry collections include "Alone in the House of My Heart" and "A Place So Deep Inside America It Can't Be Seen," winner of the 2020 Ohio Poet of the Year Award.
Gunter-Seymour's poems offer a refuge where one's curiosity, intelligence, and awareness of the complexities of contemporary Appalachian female culture take shape. The work is firmly and unapologetically attached to her home soil and examines the long-lasting effects of stereotypes and false narratives surrounding native Appalachians. More than merely commenting, her work dares to search for meaning.
Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Verse Daily, World Literature Today, and Poem-a-Day. A ninth-generation Appalachian, she is the editor of "I Thought I Heard A Cardinal Sing: Ohio's Appalachian Voices," funded through an Academy of American Poets Fellowship Grant and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Women of Appalachia Project's anthology series, "Women Speak."
