On banjo, guitar, and mandolin, Ohio natives Paul Kovac and David Mayfield present a bluegrass music program with songs and humor, framing the experience of the Appalachian transplant.
On banjo, guitar, and mandolin, David and Paul will present a bluegrass music program with songs both secular and gospel, framing the experience of the Appalachian transplant, and the music that got them through both good times and bad. This American-born music continues to inspire and entertain all who are caught in it’s web.
Ohio natives Paul Kovac and David Mayfield have been raised in the lap of northeast Ohio’s bluegrass music community, and carry on that tradition. Both multi-instrumentalists, Kovac has played with Bill Monroe and Roy Clark, and Grammy-nominated producer Mayfield has played on the Grand Ole Opry.
Music from the old hymnals provided songs and inspiration for the original, first-generation bluegrass musicians. They gave those hymns the bluegrass treatment, and composed their own songs in that style. It is well documented that the harmony singing structure of bluegrass music is derived from church harmonies.
For the past year, the duo have presented a live, one-hour, acoustic music program of bluegrass gospel songs every other Sunday at 11 am. The show streams from the old Bronson Church, in Peninsula, Ohio, on the Peninsula History Facebook page.
