A history of the superheroine in comics from early representations at the onset of World War II to our current era with Captain Marvel and the resurgence of Wonder Woman, Black Widow, and the Scarlet Witch on the big screen in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Presented by Valentino L. Zullo.
We will explore the origins and emerging renaissance of the supeheroine in comics today at Marvel, DC, Image, and Dynamite as these and other publishers become more aware of the representation of women in comics and focus their attention on the growing female readership.
The discussion will center on the ways women in comics have been presented, from the complicated and often critiqued hypersexuality, to the current representation of more realistic, powerful women. We will explore the history of various characters including Batwoman, Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, and Catwoman in order to consider the evolving history of feminism and superheroines in comics.
