We’re a "watch first – meet later" club, that gets together once a month to discuss a movie we've watched on our own.
We’re a "watch first – meet later" club, and every month the Keeping It Reel Movie Club meets at the Northwest Akron Branch Library to discuss a movie that everyone has watched on their own using Hoopla or Kanopy (services offered free through the library).
June 18th: Obvious Child (2014) - When a Brookyln comedian (Jenny Slate) gets dumped and fired, she has a one-night stand and ends up pregnant -- just in time for the worst/best Valentine's day of her life.
Nominated for Best First Feature and Best Female Lead at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Winner of the Red Crown Producer's Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Found on Hoopla.
July 16th: Real Life (1979) - Albert Brooks, in his directorial debut, presents a hilarious account of what happens to a typical American family when a group of filmmakers moves in with them to record "REAL LIFE." Brooks heads up the crew that invades the Phoenix household of Charles Grodin, Frances Lee McCain and their children. The results are disastrous...and hysterically funny. Found on Kanopy.
August 20th: Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) - Audrey Burke (Berry) is reeling from the shock of the news that has just been delivered to her door by the local police: her warm and loving husband Brian (David Duchovny), the father of their two young children, has been killed in a random act of violence. Once anchored by the love and comforts of their 11-year marriage, Audrey is now adrift. Impulsively, she turns to Jerry Sunborne (Del Toro), a down-and-out addict who has been her husband's close friend since childhood. Desperate to fill the painful void caused by her husband's death, Audrey invites Jerry to move into the room adjacent to their garage in the hope that he can help her and her children cope with their sudden loss. Jerry is facing a daily battle to stay off drugs, but in his unexpected role as surrogate parent and friend to Audrey's son and daughter he finds a core of inner resilience. As Jerry and Audrey navigate grief and denial, their fragile bonds are constantly tested.
Winner of the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Found on Hoopla.
