Discuss a nonfiction book at the library typically every second Tuesday at 6 pm and Wednesday at 11 am of the month.

June: The Moment of Lift - How Empowering Women Changes the World, by Melinda Gates. For the last twenty years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission. Her goal, as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has been to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, invest in women.

July: American Fire - Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land, by Monica Hesse. The arsons started on a cold November midnight, and didn’t stop for months. Night after night, the people of Accomack County waited to see which building would burn down next, regarding each other at first with compassion, and later suspicion.

August: The Women's Hour - The Great Fight to Win the Vote, by Elaine Weiss. In the summer of 1920, one of the pivotal political battles in United States history unfolded in Nashville, Tennessee, as the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women the right to vote, was on the cusp of victory—or, possibly, defeat. The enfranchisement of half of the citizens of the nation was at stake, and it all came down to Tennessee. The Woman’s Hour details the dramatic climax of the suffragists’ seven-decade struggle for equal citizenship, bringing into focus the powerful forces arrayed against their cause.
