Book Buzz: Nonfiction Book Discussion

Discuss a nonfiction book! March: Everything is Horrible and Wonderful; April: The Stranger in the Woods; and May: Evicted. Book Buzz meets during the day at 11 am and in the evening at 6 pm.

Discuss a nonfiction book at the library typically every second Wednesday at 11 am and Tuesday at 6 pm of the month.

Note: The April evening discussion will be on the third Tuesday of the month.

March: Everything is Horrible and Wonderful, by Stephanie Wittels Wachs - One phone call. That’s all it took to change Stephanie Wittels Wachs’s life forever…

Her younger brother, Harris, a star in the comedy world known for his work on shows like Parks and Recreation, had died of a heroin overdose. How do you make sense of such a tragic end to a life of so much hilarious brilliance?

April: The Stranger in the Woods:The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit, by Michael Finkel - Many people dream of escaping modern life. Most will never act on it—but in 1986, twenty-year-old Christopher Knight did just that when he left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the woods. He would not have a conversation with another person for the next 27 years.

May: Evicted: poverty and profit in the American city, by Matthew Desmond - Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction

Harvard sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of 21st-century America’s most devastating problems.
