We’re a "watch first – meet later" club that gets together once a month to discuss a movie we've watched on our own.
Every month the Keeping It Reel Movie Club meets at the Northwest Akron Branch Library to discuss a movie that everyone has watched on their own using Hoopla or Kanopy (services offered free through the library). Don’t know how to use Hoopla or Kanopy? No worries, come into the branch and we’ll show you how. The movie club usually meets on Thursday nights once a month at 6 pm.
March 19: Yours in Sisterhood - A documentary inspired by the breadth and complexity of letters that were sent in the 1970s to the editor of Ms., America's first mainstream feminist magazine. Collectively, the letters feel like an encyclopedia of both the 70s and the women's movement - an almost literal invocation of the second-wave feminist slogan, "the personal is political." The film documents hundreds of strangers from around the U.S. who were invited to read aloud and respond to these letters. The intimate, provocative, and sometimes heartbreaking conversations that emerge from these performances invite viewers to think about the past, present, and future of feminism.
April 16: What We Do in the Shadows - Housemates Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are three vampires who are trying to get by in modern society; from paying rent and doing housework to trying to get invited into nightclubs. When their 8000-year-old roommate Petyr turns 20-something human hipster Nick into a vampire, the guys must guide him through his newfound eternal life.
May 21: Life, Animated - The inspirational story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films.
The Northwest Akron Branch Library, along with its neighbor, the Northwest Family Recreation Center, serves as a center of active learning through a diverse offering of programs and resources. A rich collection of books for all ages is just one aspect of what the branch has to offer; its outstanding multimedia collection includes music CDs, audiobooks, and feature and documentary films. The collection has something for just about every interest and taste. Computers and computer classes, WiFi, printing, copying, scanning, and faxing are additional services that make personal and professional growth possible.
Look for Northwest Akron Branch staff at local schools and early childhood centers and at community events throughout the year. Visit the branch for more opportunities to learn and explore with others. Programming for all ages at the library is responsive to community interests, with play and story programming for very young children, book discussion groups for adults, school-age and teen crafting and gaming opportunities, and more.
