Join us on Zoom to discuss “Ring Shout” by P. Djeli Clark, a Gothic monster-filled spin on the Jim Crow South. You can pick up a copy at Norton Branch Library.
Part Southern Gothic alternate history and part Lovecraftian dark fantasy, Locus and Nebula and British Fantasy award winner “Ring Shout” by P. Djeli Clark gives readers a bevy of hardcore resistance fighters to root for against a demonically possessed Klu Klux Klan in 1922 Macon, Georgia. Maryse Boudreaux is the voice of kindness and reason, and downright devastating with her divinely enchanted African blade she summons at will. She often butts heads with Sadie Watkins, a crack shot with her rifle out to avenge her kin while also firing obscenities that could turn a drill sergeant red. Tasked with keeping the peace between her sisters in arms is the trio’s muscle, WWI veteran and bomb specialist Cordy “Chef” Lawrence. These women possess the rare gift of “the sight” that allows them to perceive the monsters’ true forms overlaying their hateful hosts. Together they fight for the soul of their country and its salvation from otherworldly predators. Brimming with heart-pounding monster-slaying action and grounded in authentic historical context and a profound sense of humanity, “Ring Shout” stands proudly beside works like the series Lovecraft Country and Toni Morrison’s Beloved.
