With steam and heart aplenty, Gail Carriger introduces Alexia Tarrabotti, an independent minded ‘spinster’ heroine armed with ample wit, her unique supernatural gift, and a wickedly thrust umbrella when the situation demands it.

Like many steampunk adventures, Soulless is fast-paced and lighthearted and crosses genres, with elements of horror and comedy of manners woven in. Already the subject of London gossip for having an Italian father she strongly resembles and being a still unwed lady of twenty-six, Alexia will need all her resources to solve the murder and disappearances of a few upper crust vampires. All while also maintaining her innocence (well maybe not ALL her innocence?) with Lord Conall Maccon, the blustering and unexpectedly amorous Scottish werewolf investigator reporting to the Crown itself.

Alexia’s heart and life will be on the line as the strange case embroils her in clashes with highly contentious communities of werewolves and vampires, dirigible chases, deadly automatons, secret societies, and some truly appalling hospitality without proper tea service.
